| Frequently Asked Questions |
What are the camp dates?
June 21 through August 13, unless there are lots of snow days that lengthen school calendars. Camp is closed on Monday, July 5th in observance of Independence day and on Tuesday, July 20th for Tisha B'Av.
Where is the camp?
Our camp is located in Owings Mills near Exit 7B, Franklin Boulevard off of I-795.
Can I see the camp before next summer?
During the off-season, we conduct tours of our campsite by appointment.
Can my child be with his friend?
Yes, if they're in the same grade and program.
What is a bunk?
Most often a group of about 12-16 children who are in the same grade and program. Bunks are not coed, but many activities are.
Who are the counselors?
Each bunk has a head counselor who is a college grad or a college upperclassman. The head counselor is assisted by college students and sometimes an 11th or 12th grader. The staff-camper ratio is 1:4.
Do the counselors run all the activities?
The sole responsibility of the counselors is each child's general welfare, and they spend all day with their bunk. Each of the day's activities is led by a different team of specialized instructors, highly trained and certified in that activity.
Will the bus come to my door?
Yes, if you're like most of our campers who live in Northwest Baltimore. Howard County residents, Kinder Campers, and those that live in remote areas have to come to centralized points.
How long is the bus ride?
Most ride average about 35 minutes each way. If you have a longer ride in the AM, you'll likely have a short ride in the PM, and vice versa.
What are the bus pick-up/drop-off times?
Times fall between 8:00-9:00 AM and 4:00-5:15 PM. Exactly where your stop falls on the route usually can't be predicted before May. You can have a different stop in the AM and PM if that's more convenient for you. Our Extended Day program is another option.
What is extended day?
You can drop off your full-day camper at camp as early as 7:30 a.m., and pick up at camp as late as 6:00 p.m. Nursery Camp has p.m. extended hours only, from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. There is no Extended Day for Kinder Camp.
What if my child gets sick or hurt?
We have two experienced RNs on duty at our Health Center who can administer medication, give first aid, and follow doctors' instructions. For anything out of the ordinary, we contact the parents or, if necessary, the emergency contacts you list for us.
What about safety at the pools and lake?
The counselors are in the water with the kids and a large aquatics staff is teaching and guarding at all times. At the lake everyone wears life jackets at all times and guards are on duty. Our pools are designed to meet the needs of all ages and swimming abilities, from pre-beginner through expert.
What happens when it rains?
Since all activity areas have indoor space, the campers follow a near regular schedule if it's just drizzling. If rain is torrential, the instructors come to the kids who are sheltered in bunk houses or covered program facilities.
What happens on really hot days?
Even though we are an outdoor camp, lots of activities take place in covered, open-sided pavilions and in the shade of our hundreds of trees. On especially hot days we limit strenuous activities and exposure to sun, and make sure campers drink often from our many icewater stations.
Can I attend for fewer than 8 weeks?
Nursery, Kinder, and Day Camp campers can register for all 8 weeks or choose 4, 5, 6, or 7 weeks. Senior Camp, Sports Camp, and Arts Camp campers can register for all 8 weeks, or choose 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 weeks. Adventure Campers may come all 8 weeks, or choose 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 weeks, however Adventure Campers entering 7th and 8th grades must register for any week of Adventure Camp prior to one of the out-of-camp- trips in order to attend a trip. Travel Campers may enroll for one or both of the trip sessions, each trip session is 2 weeks. Leadership Trainees are encouraged to attend for 8 weeks, but may registers in blocks of 2 consecutive weeks with a 4 week minimun.
What steps do you take to help assure camper security?
There is a reception office located at the camp entrance that is always staffed. All visitors must present photo ID and have permission to enter, and must leave their car keys with the receptionist while on the camp grounds.
